Manager Ian Long, assistant, Richie Colwell and GK Coach, Chris Walwyn, leave Church to join Stourbridge

It is with regret that we announce the departure of the Management Team of Ian Long, Rich Colwell and Chris (Billy) Walwyn, who have this afternoon agreed to join Stourbridge FC.

They have been the most successful managers in the recent history of the club and we have had a wonderful 4 seasons together, including 2 promotions and a play-off final.

To take our village club against the big budgets of the clubs we have faced during their tenure and to come out smiling is an achievement I’m not sure will be surpassed by any other club of our size.

From the minute they walked through the door, their professionalism shone through and the Glassboys should pinch themselves because they don’t know just how lucky they are to have them.
They have set the bar for anyone else stepping into the position and, as a club, we will never again accept the phrase “you can’t play football at Step 3 if you want to succeed”!

As their Chairman, I have always promised to let them move on to a bigger club with a bigger budget so they can really test themselves and have the opportunity to push on into the National League and beyond.
Over the past two years, I have personally fought off interest from 3 clubs attempting to secure their services and, looking back this was absolutely the right thing to do for our club. However, the latest battle against Stourbridge FC, a leviathan in non-league football was a bridge too far.

We have been close friends during their tenure and we will remain friends for a long time to come.

However, the King is Dead, Long Live the King!

We now have to move forward and start the search for a replacement management team so we can get on with our own preparations for the season.
We will shortly publish our advertisement for the position and you can rest assured, as always, we will ultimately do what is best for our club, our board and our fans.

It will no doubt be an exciting but challenging period for Alvechurch FC but one which we’ll relish the Alvechurch way.

It goes without saying that we thank Ian, Rich and Billy for everything they’ve done for the club and we wish them well in their new roles.

Up the Church!

Yours sincerely

Richard Thorndike
